Welfare Rights Adviser

  • Closing Date: Wednesday, 21 August 2019

Bristol City Council’s Welfare Rights and Money Advice Service (WRAMAS) are looking for an experienced and dynamic Welfare Rights Adviser to join our specialist team. This is an opportunity for you to maximize income and promote take up of welfare benefits for some of Bristol’s most vulnerable citizens.

You will work closely with colleagues both in internal BCC teams and in external organisations across the city, as well as directly with members of the public. Your key aim will be to maximize access to welfare benefits. Your work will include giving telephone welfare benefits advice on our helpline for members of the public and to organisations working with vulnerable client groups, as well as carrying out welfare benefits casework with vulnerable clients. We anticipate that this will include a high proportion of universal credit cases, as well as fitness for work and disability benefits.

To join our team as a Welfare Rights Adviser, you need to have substantial recent advice work experience, including representing or writing submissions for claimants at benefit appeal tribunals. You must have good knowledge of the full range of benefits legislation and caselaw. You also need to have excellent communication skills, for example to explain key aspects of welfare reform to non-specialists, and the ability to manage and progress a personal caseload.

Join us and you’ll receive a generous rewards package including flexible working and flexi-time, membership of the Local Government Pension scheme, and generous annual leave allowance. In addition you’ll be working in a supportive environment where you’ll have the chance to make Bristol a better place and contribute to its future.

Please note that this is a permanent position
